Headaches are no fun, especially for children. It is estimated that 46% of adults suffer from headaches, but they are not alone. Up to 10% of children also complain of headache issues. The American Migraine Foundation notes that around 60% of children have a headache at one time or another.
Sadly, when it comes to helping children cope with headaches, proper care is sorely lacking. A study revealed that children were often thought to be using headache symptoms as an excuse to get out of doing something they didn’t want to do. The study looked at how 40,000 children were cared for when they complained of headache symptoms. The results?
- 46% got prescribed nothing what-so-ever
- 84% were not given an evidence-based, recommended medication
- Out of every 6 patients, 1 was given an opioid with the potential for addiction.
Other doctors recommended children not get medication but focus on preventing headaches from happening. They suggested:
- Drinking plenty of water and getting proper relaxation time
- Get the right amount of sleep
- Eat a well-balanced diet
- Beware of getting concussions while playing sports
This shows a trend arising among the healthcare community. Many are trying to care for headaches and similar health conditions naturally, if at all possible.
Natural Help for Children and Migraines
Upper cervical chiropractors have seen a great deal of success in helping patients with headaches. Headaches can often be linked to a misalignment in an upper bone of the neck, particularly the C1 or atlas. This bone has the vital job of protecting the brainstem – the communication center of the entire body. However, if it becomes misaligned, it may actually put the brainstem under stress causing it to send improper signals to and from the brain.
We use a gentle method that poses no risk to children or adults to correct this misalignment. In fact, we never resort to popping or cracking the spine as in general chiropractic. Rather, the technique used allows the bone to move back into place gently and precisely. This often results in a patient experiencing fewer headaches. In some cases, they go away completely.
